The new symbol will be the "identity of the Indian currency". The currency is at present denoted simply by "Rs" or "INR" which is short for Indian rupee.
Guidelines for the contest listed on the finance ministry website stipulate the "symbol should represent the historical and cultural ethos of India."
According to the stated link the symbol should be applicable to the standard computer keyboard.
Though it is true that the Rupee may be weakening, but this is a time for celebration for an Indian National.

I think that we should have a symbol but not based on any religion,,,,,or the normal Rs or INR is fine too,,,,,not a big deal
Shaurya,
Yaa it depends on the people who will design it.
I truly believe in same saying.
vinit,
getting a symbol for rupee without any referral to a single nation is going to be really hard in a pseudo secular nation like ours...
probably they will get a symbol that incorporates every major religion of india, making it that much harder, for the keyboard manufacturers to put in on!
Ankit,
Seeing the vulnerability and opaque nature of India and its diversified religions it is going to be tough to design a symbol, so advisors of Central govt and RBI have suggested Rs or INR as standard currency symbol. It however will be good to see how the designers incorporate this task.
